Wascana Athletes win at National Championships

Wascana Racing Canoe Club athletes did well at the Canadian Sprint CanoeKayak Championships held August 23 to 27th in Welland, Ontario. Christine Selinger won a gold medal Thursday at the world canoe and kayak championships in Szeged, Hungary. Selinger won the V1 paranoe LTA 200 metres, which she also won last year. Saskatchewan athletes had strong results at the CanoeKayak Canada national team trials held July 9th and 10th in Montreal, QC.  Kia Byers, of Regina, once again came up with the top place finish in the Senior Women’s K1 200m event.  Byers has placed first in every national level competition in this distance in at least the past two years. The Saskatchewan canoe/kayak team has been selected. The team will compete at the Western Canada Summer Games in Kamloops from August 5th to 14th. Junior National Team Trial Results

Six Saskatchewan sprint canoe/kayak athletes had very strong results at the junior national team trials held June 4 & 5 in Dartmouth, NS. Simon Fense of Regina was successful over the weekend with a 4th place finish in the K1 1000m event and a 7th place finish in the K1 200m event. Canoe Kayak World Cup Competition

Kia Byers of Regina had another successful weekend competing in canoe/kayak World Cup competition.   Byers took 2nd place in B final of the women’s K-1 200m event, placing 11th overall.  She was also a member of the women’s K1 200m relay team.  The team went into the final with medal hopes after a strong result in their heat.  However, due to a transition error in the 3rd leg of the race the...

Kia Byers, of Regina, and Aaron Rublee, who lived in Regina before moving to Oakville, Ont, took part in the International Canoe Federation’s World Cup 2 event on the weekend in Racice, Czech Republic.
