The victory gives the Cougars a berth in the consolation final on Monday afternoon. They’ll play provincial rival Saskatchewan, as the Huskies defeated McGill in the other consolation semifinal on Sunday.

Lindsay Ledingham led the Cougars with 19 points and 10 rebounds. The fourth-year forward did most of her damage from the free throw line, where she was 11-for-13 in the win. Brittany Read also registered a double-double for the Cougars, scoring 11 points and adding 11 rebounds. Joanna Zalesiak had 17 points and six assists for the U of R, while Danielle Schmidt scored 15 and Alyssia Kajati had 10 points and nine rebounds in just 15 minutes off the bench.

Kristy Moore had 19 points to lead Acadia.

It was all Acadia early on, as the Axewomen scored the first nine points of the contest before Schmidt finally got the Cougars on the board with a layup. The Cougars trailed by as many as 11 in the first quarter, but ended the quarter on a 15-2 run and led 18-16 going into the second.

Acadia came out strong in the second quarter, taking the lead back with a 13-3 run and building up as much as a 12-point advantage. Carly Graham hit a three-pointer late in the quarter for the Cougars to get to within five, but an Acadia bucket just before the buzzer gave the Axewomen a 43-36 advantage at the half.

The Cougars scored seven straight points to end the third quarter and take a three-point lead into the fourth, where the teams traded leads six times in the first three minutes of the quarter before the Cougars pulled ahead for good. Regina saw a six-point lead dwindle to just a one-point advantage with 1:25 left in the fourth after a Jasmine Parent layup for Acadia, but the Cougars held the Axemen off the board the rest of the way until another Parent layup at the buzzer with the outcome already decided.

Two free throws apiece from Ledingham and Schmidt and a big block by Zalesiak in the final minute of the contest helped seal the victory for the Cougars.

NOTES: Sunday’s game was the first postseason meeting between Regina and Acadia … the Cougars and Saskatchewan will meet on Monday for the fourth time in the postseason and just the second time in a national tournament … the only other time Regina and Saskatchewan have played against each other in a CIS Championship game was in 2010, when the Huskies scored a 78-67 win in the third-place game.

The No. 1-seeded Cougars put together a 19-8 run capped by back-to-back three-pointers by Michelle Clark and Carly Graham to pull to within six points late in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t finish off the comeback. The Cougars got to within five points in the waning moments of the contest, but Calgary sealed the victory with four late free throws.

The Cougars will now take on Acadia in the consolation semifinals on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., while Calgary will meet Windsor in the semifinals on Sunday night.

Jenna Kaye scored a game-high 23 points for Calgary, while Jessica Franz had 21 points and 11 rebounds to register the game’s lone double-double. Tamara Jarrett also scored in double figures for the Dinos, ending up with 12 points.

Megan Chamberlin and Joanna Zalesiak both had 14 points to lead the Cougars, with ten of Chamberlin’s 14 points coming during the fourth quarter alone. Zalesiak added eight rebounds and eight assists for the Cougars, while Michelle Clark chipped in with 11 points.

Franz and Kaye sparked the Dinos early on, scoring eight points apiece in the opening frame as Calgary led 22-13 after the first quarter. The Cougars opened the second quarter with six straights points to get to within three, but Calgary scored 19 of the remaining 22 points to take a 19-point lead into the half.

Both teams scored 19 points in the third quarter, setting the stage for Regina’s comeback which came up just short.

NOTES: The Cougars are now 2-2 all-time against Calgary in CIS Championship games … the U of R has never played Acadia in a postseason contest … the winner of the Regina/Acadia game will play the winner of the Saskatchewan/McGill in the fifth-place game on Monday afternoon.

It’s been a historic season for the University of Regina’s women’s basketball team and the Cougars will be looking to cap it off in grand style this weekend at the 2012 CIS Championship in Calgary.

The Cougars have gone through the 2011-12 campaign with an incredible 35-2 overall record. They avenged one of those two hiccups (a non-conference loss to Brock in October) with a victory over the Badgers last weekend in the final of the CIS West Regional in Saskatoon – a win which also earned the U of R an automatic trip to this weekend’s nationals.

And the Cougars may get a chance at revenge from their only other loss of the season, a home setback to UBC two weekends ago in the Canada West championship game. The No. 1-seeded Cougars might just have a date with the Thunderbirds – who come into the tournament as the No. 2 seed – when Monday’s games roll around.

But in between those two losses, the Cougars put together a magical run which saw them register the first undefeated conference season in U of R history. The team recovered after the Brock loss with victories in their final three non-conference games, went through the Canada West gauntlet with a perfect 20-0 record, swept Winnipeg in the Canada West quarterfinals, and defeated Fraser Valley in the conference semifinals before finally falling to UBC in the Canada West title game.

All told, the Cougars won 26 consecutive games while putting together just the 12th undefeated season by a Canada West team. They boasted one of the most potent offences in the history of Canada West basketball, as their average of 84.2 points per game was eclipsed only by the 1988-89 and 1989-90 versions of the Calgary Dinos.

At the helm of the U of R offence is guard Joanna Zalesiak, who was named Canada West’s MVP and a conference first-team all-star this season. Zalesiak led the entire CIS with 117 assists during conference play, finished fourth in Canada West with 55 steals, and finished second on the Cougars in both points (12.8) and rebounds (6.8) per game.

Fourth-year forward Lindsay Ledingham represented Canada twice in 2011 – first at the Summer Universiade in China and again at the Pan-American Games in Mexico – and parlayed those experiences into her second consecutive campaign with Canada West second-team all-star honours. Ledingham averaged 12.5 points and a team-high 7.7 rebounds per game while registering double-doubles in six of the team’s 20 Canada West games.

And though she didn’t receive any postseason awards, Michelle Clark led the Cougars in scoring in her first season at the U of R after transferring from Purdue University. Clark averaged 15.0 points per game and set a University of Regina record with 57 three-pointers made during the conference schedule. She also was second on the team in assists and third in steals.

The Cougars have rolled with the same starting five for 29 games in a row entering this weekend’s tournament, including Zalesiak, Ledingham, Clark, Brittany Read, and Danielle Schmidt. Schmidt is one of four Cougars to have averaged double figures in scoring (10.3 points per game) during the conference schedule, while Read starts down low but shares the post duties with rookie Alyssia Kajati and second-year player Jennilea Coppola.

Fifth-year co-captain Carly Graham essentially receives starter’s minutes off the bench for the Cougars, as the shooting guard averaged 8.6 points per game during Canada West play and led the team with a .430 percentage from three-point land.

Megan Chamberlin averages 14.2 minutes per game for the Cougars, while both Coppola – the team’s leader in blocked shots – and Kajati have seen their floor time steadily increase as the season has progressed.

Rookie guard Madi Docherty averaged exactly 10 minutes per contest in her first season of eligibility and appeared in 17 of the team’s 20 conference games, while second-year players Taylor Pelletier and Kayla Hannah also average in excess of five minutes of playing time per game.

Taylor, who has guided the Cougars to a 35-2 overall record this so far this season and a No. 1 seed in this weekend’s national tournament, becomes just the second coach in the history of the U of R’s women’s basketball program to earn the Peter Ennis Award as the national coach of the year. Christine Stapleton (1997) is the only other Cougar coach to earn the award.

“This award recognizes not only Dave and the work he’s done with the program over his time here, but also the dedication of the players and (assistant coach) Steve Burrows,” University of Regina director of athletics Dick White said. “Dave is very deserving of being included in the group of great coaches that have won the Peter Ennis Award in the past.”

Taylor has led the Cougars to four appearances in the CIS Final Eight in his six years as the team’s bench boss. He ranks second behind Stapleton in both conference victories (99) and postseason wins (23) on the U of R’s all-time coaching register.

Zalesiak becomes the seventh Cougar in program history to earn multiple All-Canadian selections. She was also named the Canada West MVP earlier this month after leading the CIS with 117 assists during conference play and finishing fourth in Canada West with 55 steals. She also averaged 12.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game during the Canada West schedule and has upped those numbers in the playoffs, as Zalesiak is averaging 13.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game through the team’s first six postseason contests.

“Joanna had a fantastic season for us and was willing to make adjustments to her game to help make us better as a team,” Taylor said. “She’s simply one of the most electric guards in the CIS and it’s great to see her recognized as one of the top players in the country.”

Zalesiak becomes the seventh player in U of R women’s basketball history to earn multiple All-Canadian selections, joining a group that includes Cougar legends Cymone Bouchard, Andrea Gottselig, Jackie Moore, Trena Mott, Deanne Shmyr, and Corrin Wersta.

The Cougars kick off the 2012 CIS Championship on Saturday night against host Calgary. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. (www.ssncanada.ca).
